The Politics of Health - 10 August 2018
The Women’s Leadership Initiative’s third Learning & Networking event was held on 10 August 2018 in Perth.
Held at the University Club of Western Australia, the theme of the event was The Politics of Health: Australian and Pacific perspectives on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and policy change.
A panel of leading Australian and Pacific experts shared insights and lessons learned in their work to combat NCDs, and reflected on the links between policy, politics and behaviour change in relation to NCDs in the Pacific.
Invited speakers were:
- Dr Colin Wiltshire, Department of Pacific Affairs, ANU (Convenor)
- Dr Sunia Soakai, Deputy Director, Public Health Division, Pacific Community
- Ms Anita George, Manager, Prevention, McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer
- Dr Isimeli Tukana, National Adviser, NCDs, Fiji Ministry of Health.
Current Women’s Leadership Initiative participant, Catherine Pukena (Papua New Guinea) also shared her experiences of the Leadership & Mentoring program with fellow scholars in the audience.
A total of 36 guests attended the event, including Australia Awards and New Colombo Plan scholars and spouses, private sector and government stakeholders, student contact officers, and representatives from DFAT’s Western Australia state office.
