The Food Security Challenge: Pacific and Australian Perspectives
Food is a fundamental human right. However, the United Nations estimates that almost 750 million people – or nearly 10% of the world’s population – were exposed to severe levels of food insecurity in 2019, with women and girls comprising roughly 60% of these.
The Pacific has not escaped the clutches of the world’s ‘food crisis’. Vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change, increased urbanisation, and a shift away from subsistence agriculture and fisheries to high cost imported foods, have all contributed to a rise in household food insecurity, childhood micronutrient deficiencies and non-communicable diseases in Pacific Islands Countries.
So, where do we go from here? The challenge of how to effectively (and sustainably) address food security – and the associated issue of food waste – is a major preoccupation for policy-makers, development partners, civil society and business leaders alike. It is also becoming increasingly accepted that – to be effective – genuinely cross-sectoral, multi-stakeholder, ‘joined up’ approaches will be needed to address this burden in the longer term.
In this interactive online session, moderated by WLI Team Leader Georgina Cope, attendees heard from Pacific and Australian speakers who spoke about their work in food security and some of the solutions they are taking to combat this important issue.
